I wish I had this quote posted somewhere in my classroom. Often, we consider the act of appreciation as acceptance or thanksgiving on our part. I love the idea of turning it towards the other party, seeing excellence in someone else.

Some students often struggle to see the excellence in Mozart or choral music of the Renaissance. Sometimes I make my goal for students to immediately fall in love with a piece and download it and erase all other music from their iPods. Making students appreciate music shouldn’t be a recruitment tactic like we sometimes make it!

Help students see the excellence in music and the arts by showing them why the material they are learning is important.

Further, help your ensembles recognize the excellence in each other!! I always tell my students, “We have not won until we are one.” It all comes down to appreciation, seeing the excellence in each other.
